Who are Ahlul-Bayt?
The term Ahlul-Bayt ( أهل البيت ) means the family of the household. In Islam, Ahlul-Bayt refers to the family of the last Prophet Muhammad ﷺ includes his wives, his children, and Banu Hashim, Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib and their freed slaves.
The Qur’an and Sunnah clarify that this includes:
- The Wives of the Prophet ﷺ – because Allah explicitly calls them “Ahlul-Bayt” in Surah Al-Ahzab
(33:33):
“Allah only wishes to remove from you impurity, O members of the household (Ahlul-Bayt), and purify you completely.”
In this verse, the wives are addressed directly, proving that the Prophet’s wives are Ahlul-Bayt.
And the angels said to Sarah the wife of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) (interpretation of the meaning):
“The Mercy of Allah and His Blessings be on you, O the family [of Ibrahim (Abraham)]” [Hood 11:73]
And because Allah excluded the wife of Lut from the family of Lut (peace be upon him) with regard to survival, when He said (interpretation of the meaning):
“(All) except the family of Lut. Them all we are surely going to save (from destruction). Except his wife…” [al-Hijr 15:59-60]
This indicates that the wife is part of the family.
- His Children and Grandchildren – such as Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn (رضي
الله عنهم).
- The Family of ʿAli – as
clarified in authentic hadith.
Thus, Ahlul-Bayt is broader than the Shia restricted definition. It includes the wives, children, and close family, not just a limited group.
Virtues of Ahlul-Bayt
The Qur’an and Hadith highlight their great status:
- The Prophet ﷺ said in his Khutbah
at Khumm:
“I am leaving among you two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my Ahlul-Bayt. I remind you to fear Allah regarding my Ahlul-Bayt.”
(Sahih Muslim 2408) - Abu Bakr (رضي الله
عنه) said:
“By Allah! To keep good relations with the family of the Messenger ﷺ is more beloved to me than to keep relations with my own family.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 3712)
This shows that loving and respecting Ahlul-Bayt is part of Iman.
Respecting Ahlul-Bayt According to Ahlus-Sunnah
Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaʿah believes that:
- Love and respect for Ahlul-Bayt is obligatory.
- This love does not mean exaggeration (ghuluw), nor does it mean giving them divine qualities.
- True love is by following their guidance
and preserving their honour.
The Prophet ﷺ himself lived simply and ordered his family to obey Allah. He said to Fatimah (رضي الله عنها):
“O Fatimah, save yourself from the Fire, for I cannot avail you against
Allah in anything.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 2753, Sahih Muslim 206)
This shows that lineage alone does not save a person; rather, faith and deeds do.
The Shia Distortion
It is important to clarify the difference between earlier Shia and today’s Rafidah Shia:
- Earlier Shia only held the opinion
that ʿAli (رضي الله
عنه) had more right to the Khilafah after the Prophet
ﷺ. However, they did not declare Abu Bakr, Umar, or Aisha
(رضي الله عنهم) as disbelievers
(kuffar).
- Rafidah Shia today have gone to
extremes. They openly declare Abu Bakr, Umar, and Aisha (رضي
الله عنهم) as disbelievers. Some
even accuse Aisha (رضي الله
عنها) of adultery – a
heinous lie and an act of major kufr, because Allah Himself declared her
innocent in Surah An-Noor (24:11–26).
Thus, the Shia restriction of Ahlul-Bayt to only ʿAli, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn is false and against Qur’an and Sunnah.
Questioner:
What is the meaning of Shi'a?
Allamah Shaykh Salih Al-Fawzan said: “Shi'a means a sect.
The original meaning is a sect.
And in its original meaning, it means division.
Then it was used for those who claim that they loved Ahl al-Bayt.
The Shia of Ahl al-Bayt as they claim.
All of us, and all praise is for Allah, are a Shi'a of Ahl al-Bayt — meaning, that we love them, take them as an example, and know their status.
• But worshipping them besides Allah, or going into extremes with them, or saying that the Khilāfah belongs to them, and the Companions took it from them by force and oppressed them, and the likes of this from the absurdities of the Shi'a — then this is falsehood and evil.
And this splitting is strictly prohibited”.End of speech source: We are All the Shi'a of Ahlu al-Bayt | Shaykh Saleh al-Fawzan حفظه الله - YouTube
Imam Jafar Abu Muhammad at-Tahawi mention:And whoever speaks well of the Companions of Allaah’s Messenger (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) and his wives who were pure and free of having any stain upon their honour, and his offspring who were untainted and free of every impurity, then he is free of Hypocrisy. Misguidance of Engineer Mirza Ali (Pakistan)
There is a misguided preacher in Pakistan named Engineer Mirza Ali. He frequently mentions the mistakes of the Sahabah (companions) in public, spreading their disputes and errors as if they were sins to be mocked but he didn't mention his own father and mother's mistakes and sins openly to the public.
Yet, Allah has forgiven the Sahabah and promised them Paradise. Allah commands us in the Qur’an:
“And those who came after them say: ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our
brothers who preceded us in faith, and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who believed. Our
Lord, indeed You are Most Kind, Most Merciful.’”
(Surah
Al-Hashr 59:10)
Qur’ān – Allah’s Pleasure and Promise of Jannah
Allah ﷻ praised the Muhājirūn and Anṣār and promised them Paradise:
“And the foremost to embrace Islam of the Muhājirūn and the
Anṣār, and those who followed them with good — Allah is pleased with them and they are
pleased with Him. And He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever.
That is the great success.”
(Sūrah At-Tawbah 9:100)
This verse is a direct promise of Paradise for the Ṣaḥābah (the first believers, Muhājirūn & Anṣār).
Aḥādīth – Specific Companions Promised Jannah
The Prophet ﷺ gave glad tidings to many companions by name. Among the most famous:
“Ten are in Paradise: Abu Bakr is in Paradise, ‘Umar is in Paradise,
‘Uthmān is in Paradise, ‘Alī is in Paradise, Ṭalḥah is in Paradise,
Az-Zubayr is in Paradise, ‘Abdur-Raḥmān ibn ‘Awf is in Paradise, Sa‘d ibn
Abī Waqqāṣ is in Paradise, Sa‘īd ibn Zayd is in Paradise, and Abu ‘Ubaydah
ibn Al-Jarrāḥ is in Paradise.”
(Sunan At-Tirmidhī,
3747 – ṣaḥīḥ)
These are known as al-‘Asharah al-Mubashsharah (the ten promised Paradise).
Notice that Allah ordered us to pray for forgiveness for the Sahabah, not to spread their mistakes.
Furthermore, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not abuse my Companions. For by Him in Whose Hand is my soul, if one of
you were to spend gold equal to Uhud (mountain), it would not equal even a handful of what they spent, nor
half of it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 3673, Sahih Muslim 2540)
This hadith proves that their rank is far beyond ours, and their errors are forgiven.
Engineer Mirza Ali also falsely accuses the scholars of “hiding” such knowledge(what happened between companions and their mistakes and sins). This is a lie, because our scholars have preserved history, taught what happened, but with the principle of not spreading the sins and mistakes of Shahabah publicly. They mention events for knowledge, not for dishonouring the Sahabah.
As pointed out, he never publicizes the sins of his own parents, yet he feels free to highlight the mistakes of the best generation – this is hypocrisy and misguidance.
Conclusion
- Ahlul-Bayt includes the wives, children, and relatives of the
Prophet ﷺ.
- Respecting them is part of Iman, but
without exaggeration or extremism.
- Earlier Shia differed politically but didn’t curse the
Sahabah, while today’s Rafidah Shia commit kufr
by cursing Abu Bakr, Umar, and Aisha (رضي الله
عنهم).
- Spreading the mistakes of the Sahabah publicly is
forbidden, and those who do so, like Engineer Mirza Ali, oppose the Qur’an
and Sunnah.
👉 The correct way is to love Ahlul-Bayt, honour the Sahabah, and follow the Qur’an and Sunnah as understood by them.
