Footnotes(Answers and Explanation Included):
[1] The correct answer is D. Shirk
Explanation:
Shirk (associating partners with Allah in worship) is the greatest sin in Islam, and it is the one sin that Allah will never forgive if a person dies without repenting from it.
"Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him,
but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills..."
📖
Surah an-Nisā’ (4:48)
❗ Why Is Shirk the Greatest Ẓulm?
The Prophet ﷺ explained the verse:
"The greatest wrong is to associate others with Allah in
worship."
📚 Sahih al-Bukhari,
Tafsir Ibn Kathir
It is a violation of the greatest right — the right of Allah to be worshipped alone.
☠️ Other Major Sins like Murder, Rape, Disobeying parents and Zina:
These are among the gravest crimes in Islam and are major sins (kabā’ir), but they are forgivable if a person sincerely repents before death and even if the person doesn't repent in this world, such person will be under Allah's will, if Allah will he may punish or if Allah will he may forgive on the day of judgement, we don't know exactly but we are very sure that such person will not remain in the hellfire forever also remember these grave crimes lesser than major shirk has grave punishment in this world, simply you rape, murder, kill Islam doesn't allow just let it go, nah rather there is death punishment in this world.
"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by
sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all
sins..."
📖 Surah az-Zumar (39:53)
Except for shirk — which is unforgivable after death.
🔥 If a person dies upon Shirk:
"Indeed, whoever associates others with Allah – Allah has
forbidden Paradise for him, and his refuge is the Fire."
📖
Surah al-Mā’idah (5:72)
✅ Summary:
- Shirk is the greatest
sin and the worst oppression.
- It nullifies Islam and all deeds.
- If someone dies committing shirk, they will never
be forgiven.
- This is why Tawheed is the foundation of Islam, and every Prophet came to warn against shirk.
[2] correct answer is: A. After the death of Prophet Adam Alayhi salam
❓ Question 2: When did Shirk (Polytheism) begin?
- A) ✅ After the death of
Prophet Adam (ʿalayhi as-salām)
- B) During the time of Prophet Adam (ʿalayhi
as-salām)
- C) At the time of the revelation of the Qur’an to
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
- D) During the time of Prophet Ibrahim (ʿalayhi
as-salām)
📖 Explanation:
Shirk did not exist during the lifetime of Prophet Adam (ʿalayhi as-salām). He and his immediate descendants were upon pure Tawheed (worship of Allah alone without shirk).
Shirk first appeared after the death of the righteous people from among the early generations following Adam — particularly in the time of Prophet Nūḥ (Noah, ʿalayhi as-salām).
🔍 Evidence from the Qur’an:
"And they said, 'Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or
Suwaʿ or Yaghūth and Yaʿūq and Nasr.'"
📖 Surah Nūḥ (71:23)
These names were originally righteous men from Adam’s descendants. After their deaths, people began to build statues of them out of love and respect. Then, over generations, Shayṭān deceived them into worshipping these images, introducing Shirk.
🗣️ Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) explained:
"These were names of righteous men from among the people of
Nūḥ. When they died, Shayṭān inspired their people to erect statues in their
honor... Then later generations began worshipping them."
📚
Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr on Surah
Nūḥ 71:23
⚠️ Summary:
- Shirk did not exist at the time of
Adam.
- It began after death of Adam.
- It started as exaggerated love for
the righteous, which turned into idol worship.
This is why every Prophet, starting with Nūḥ, came with the call to Tawḥīd and warning against Shirk.
[3] The correct answer is: C. Righteous Muslims were worshipped after their death
❓ Question 3: How did Shirk (Polytheism) first begin among people, according to the Qur'an and Sunnah?
- People started worshipping Idols directly by considering Idols are co-equal to Allah & independent of Allah
- People started worshipping prophets
- ✅ C) Righteous Muslims were worshipped after their death
- People started rejecting the existence of Allah, or people
started believing Allah is not the true Ilah(God) that deserves to be worshipped alone.
📖 Explanation:
The origin of Shirk began not with outright idol worship or denial of Allah, but with exaggerated love and reverence for righteous individuals who were close to Allah. After their deaths, people made images and statues of them to remember and honor them, and over time, these figures were worshipped instead of Allah.
This was clearly explained by Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه), as reported in Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr.
🔍 Qur’anic Evidence:
"And they said, 'Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd or
Suwāʿ or Yaghūth and Yaʿūq and Nasr.'"
📖 Surah
Nūḥ (71:23)
These were names of righteous people from among the early generations. Shayṭān whispered to the people to make statues of them, and with time, the statues were worshipped.
📚 Explanation by Ibn ʿAbbās:
"These were names of righteous men. When they died, Shayṭān
inspired their people to erect statues in their honor and name them. In the next generations, people
began worshipping them."
📚 Sahih al-Bukhari (4920), Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr
🔁 Pattern of Shirk:
- Love of the righteous
- Exaggeration and innovation
- Statues/images to remember them
- Worship and supplication directed to them
This is why the Prophet ﷺ strictly forbade building graves or shrines over righteous people.
🔒 He ﷺ said:
"Beware of those who came before you. They used to take the graves of their
Prophets as places of worship. Do not take graves as places of worship. I forbid you from
that."
📚 Sahih Muslim (532)
✅ Summary:
- Shirk began through righteous individuals being glorified after
their death.
- Over time, they were turned into objects of worship.
- The Qur'an and Sunnah both confirm this historical
pattern.
- This is why Tawheed (worship of Allah alone) is the foundation
of Islam, and every Prophet came to restore it.
[4] The correct answer is D. They were righteous Muslim men who lived before the time of Prophet Nūḥ (ʿalayhi as-salām), whom the people later idolised and began to worship
❓ Question 4: Who were Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, and Nasr in early human history?
- A) Angels
- B) Prophets
- C) Idols made by Pharaoh (Fir‘awn)
- ✅ D) They were righteous Muslim men who
lived before the time of Prophet Nūḥ (ʿalayhi as-salām), whom the people later
idolised and began to worship.
📖 Explanation:
Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, and Nasr were righteous believers who lived before the time of Prophet Nūḥ (ʿalayhi as-salām). When they died, the people were saddened and Shayṭān (Satan) inspired them to build statues and images in their memory — not initially for worship, but for "remembrance."
However, in later generations, the people began worshipping those statues, believing they could bring benefit or intercede with Allah. This was the first appearance of Shirk (polytheism) in human history.
🔍 Qur'anic Evidence:
"And they said: Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd, nor
Suwāʿ, nor Yaghūth, and Yaʿūq and Nasr."
📖
Surah Nūḥ (71:23)
💬 Tafsīr Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه):
“These were the names of righteous men among the people of Nūḥ. When
they died, the people built statues of them to remember their worship. Later generations were led to
worship them.”
📚 Sahih al-Bukhari and
Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr
✅ Summary:
- These were righteous Muslim men, not angels or prophets.
- Shirk started after their death, when
people exaggerated their status.
- This is a lesson to avoid exaggerating righteous figures or building shrines and statues.
[5] The correct answer is B. To remember & honour them
❓ Question 5: What was the original reason people made statues of righteous Muslim individuals (Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, and Nasr)?
- A) To decorate their homes
- ✅ B) To remember & honour
them
- C) To sell them in the market
- D) To challenge the prophet
📖 Explanation:
After the death of these righteous men, Shayṭān whispered to the people to make statues or images of them as a reminder of their piety, to encourage worship, and to keep their memory alive. The people did not initially worship the statues — they only made them out of love and respect, thinking this would help them stay connected to righteous deeds.
However, later generations who were ignorant of the original intent began to worship the statues. This eventually led to the first occurrence of shirk (associating partners with Allah) in human history.
🔍 Evidence from Tafsīr and Hadith:
🔹 Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) said:
“Indeed, these (names) were righteous men from among the people of
Nūḥ. When they died, Shayṭān inspired their people to erect statues in their honor
and name them. The statues were not worshipped at first, but as generations passed, they began to be
worshipped.”
📚 Sahih al-Bukhari (4920),
Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr
⚠️ Lesson:
- What started as a bid‘ah
(innovation) led to major shirk.
- This is why Islam strictly forbids:
- Exaggerating righteous individuals.
- Building shrines or statues over graves.
- Using images or relics in acts of worship.
[6] The correct answer is C. Nuh
❓ Question 6: Which messanger was sent to the first nation of people who committed major shirk (polytheism)?
✅ Correct Answer: C) Nūḥ (Noah) (ʿalayhi as-salām)
📖 Explanation:
Prophet Nūḥ (Noah, ʿalayhi as-salām) was the first Messenger sent by Allah to mankind after shirk (major polytheism) appeared on earth.
- Before him, the people followed Tawḥīd
(worshipping Allah alone) upon the guidance of Ādam
(ʿalayhi as-salām) and his righteous descendants.
- Over time, after the death of pious individuals like Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, and Nasr, people began
to make statues of them to remember and honor them.
- Later generations, forgetting the original purpose, began worshipping these statues, committing major
shirk by associating partners with Allah.
So, Allah sent Prophet Nūḥ (ʿalayhi as-salām) to call his people back to Tawḥīd.
🔹 Qur’ān Evidence:
"Indeed, We sent Nūḥ to his people, and he said, ‘O my
people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a
tremendous Day.’"
📖 Surah
al-A‘rāf (7:59)
"And they said, 'Do not abandon your gods and do not abandon Wadd,
nor Suwāʿ, nor Yaghūth and Yaʿūq and
Nasr.'"
📖 Surah Nūḥ
(71:23)
💬 From the Sunnah:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Between Adam and Nūḥ, there were ten generations, all of
them upon Tawḥīd."
📚 Sahih Ibn
Ḥibbān and other sources, authenticated by Shaykh
al-Albānī.
This shows that shirk first appeared among the people of Nūḥ, and he was the first prophet sent to combat it.
✅ Summary:
- The first major shirk happened
after the death of righteous men.
- Prophet Nūḥ (ʿalayhi
as-salām) was the first prophet sent to a nation
committing shirk.
- His mission was to call them back to worshipping
Allah alone.
Yes, Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, and Nasr were originally righteous Muslim men — believers in Tawḥīd (Islamic monotheism).
✅ Who were they?
They were:
- Pious worshippers of Allah alone.
- Lived before the time of Prophet Nūḥ
(ʿalayhi as-salām).
- Known for their devotion, knowledge, and righteous
actions.
After they died, Shayṭān (Satan) whispered to their people:
“Make statues of them to remember their worship and be inspired.”
So, people made images and statues not to worship, but to honor and remember them — this was the beginning of Bidʿah (innovation). Later, this innovation led to shirk, when people began to worship the statues.
🧾 Evidence from the Salaf:
🔹 Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) said:
“These were righteous men among the people of Nūḥ. When they died, the
people made images of them. Then later generations began to worship them.”
📚
Sahih al-Bukhārī (4920), Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr
❗ Key Point:
They were Muslim believers in the Oneness of Allah — but over time, people exaggerated their status, and it led to shirk.
This is why in Islam:
- We do not build statues or shrines over the graves of pious people.
- We avoid exaggeration in praising righteous individuals.
- All acts of worship must be directed only to Allah — no matter how beloved or pious the person is.
[7] The correct answer is C. Worship of righteous muslims in the form of Idols
📖 Explanation:
The first form of major shirk (polytheism) practiced by mankind was the worship of righteous Muslims — not because they were evil or disbelievers, but because people exaggerated their status after death, made statues of them, and eventually began to worship them.
💬 What Happened?
- After the death of righteous men like Wadd,
Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, and Nasr, people:
- Built statues to honor them.
- Intended only remembrance at first.
- Over time, later
generations began to worship the statues.
- This became the first occurrence of shirk on
Earth.
📚 Proof from the Qur’an:
"And they said: 'Never leave your gods and never leave Wadd, nor
Suwāʿ, nor Yaghūth and Yaʿūq and
Nasr.'"
📖 Surah Nūḥ
(71:23)
These names were righteous men, but Shayṭān led people gradually into idol-worship.
🧠 Proof from Hadith and the Salaf:
Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) said:
"These were the names of righteous men among the people of Nūḥ. When
they died, the Shayṭān inspired their people to set up statues at their graves... Later
generations worshipped them."
📚 Sahih
al-Bukhārī (4920), Tafsīr Ibn
Kathīr
⚠️ Key Lesson:
This proves that:
- Shirk began not with open disbelief, but through
exaggeration in honoring the pious.
- It shows the danger of innovations
(Bidʿah) and veneration of the dead in Islam.
- Islam strictly prohibits building shrines, statues, or calling upon righteous people — even prophets — instead of Allah.
[8] The correct answer is A. They believed it would help them remember & become more pious
📖 Explanation:
The people who made the first statues of righteous Muslims did not intend to worship them at first. Instead, they thought:
“These were righteous men who loved Allah. If we make statues of them, it will help us remember them, their worship, and become better Muslims ourselves.”
So, they made statues with good intentions, such as:
- Honoring their memory
- Encouraging others to be pious
- Keeping alive their legacy
But over time, Satan (Shayṭān) misled the next generations, who did not know the original purpose. Eventually, the people started worshipping the statues, thinking they could bring blessings, intercede with Allah, or had divine power.
📚 Proof from the Salaf:
Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) said:
“These were righteous men among the people of Nūḥ. When they died, the
people made images of them to remember them. But when that generation died, the next began to worship
the images.”
📘 Sahih al-Bukhārī (Hadith 4920)
This is how major shirk first entered the world — not by denial of Allah, but by innovation (Bidʿah) and exaggeration in honoring the pious.
⚠️ Lesson:
- Good intentions are not enough in matters of worship.
- Islam prohibits statues,
shrines, and exaggeration in praising righteous people — even prophets.
- What began as a reminder turned into idolatry and shirk, the greatest sin in Islam.
[9] The correct answer is A. Major Shirk
❓ Question 9: Was the shirk at the time of Nūḥ (ʿalayhi as-salām) major or minor?
- A) ✅ Major shirk
- B) Minor shirk
- C) Both
- D) None, it was kufr only
✅ Correct Answer: A) Major shirk
📖 Explanation:
The shirk (polytheism) committed by the people during the time of Prophet Nūḥ (ʿalayhi as-salām) was major shirk (ash-shirk al-akbar). This is the most severe form of associating partners with Allah — such as worshipping idols, calling upon the dead, or seeking intercession from others besides Allah.
They worshipped statues of righteous men like Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, and Nasr, turning to them in du‘ā (supplication) and devotion, which are acts of worship due to Allah alone.
"And they said, ‘Do not abandon your gods: Wadd, nor Suwaʿ,
nor Yaghūth, Yaʿūq and Nasr.’"
📖 Surah Nūḥ 71:23
⚖️ Difference Between Major Shirk and Minor Shirk:
1.Major Shirk (Shirk Akbar):
Takes a person out of Islam.
Leads to eternal Hell if not repented from.
Includes: Worshipping others, calling upon saints, sacrificing for others.Invalidates all deeds
2.Minor Shirk (Shirk Asghar):
Does not take a person out of Islam.
Includes: Riya’ (showing off), swearing by other than Allah.
Decreases reward and may nullify specific good deeds.
A major sin, but not eternal Hell.
⚠️ Shirk vs. Kufr:
- Shirk = Associating partners with
Allah.
- Kufr = Disbelief in Allah, His
Messenger, or essential Islamic beliefs.
They overlap, but are not identical:
- Every shirk is kufr, but not every kufr is shirk.
- Shirk relates mostly to acts of worship.
- Kufr can be in belief, rejection, or mockery.
- Sometimes kufr can be shirk which makes kufr=shirk
🔥 Both Major Shirk and Major Kufr:
- Lead to eternal Hellfire if a
person dies upon it without repentance.
- Cause the person’s Islam to be
nullified.
- Allah says:
“Indeed, whoever associates partners with Allah – Allah has
forbidden Paradise for him, and his refuge is the Fire…”
📖
Surah al-Mā’idah 5:72
📝 Summary:
- The shirk in Nūḥ's time was major
shirk.
- It was the first shirk to appear on Earth after Tawḥīd.
- Major shirk and major kufr both nullify Islam and lead to eternal punishment if unrepented.
[10] The correct answer is: C. Yes, whether at the grave or far away — invoking others besides Allah is major shirk like idol worship.
❓ Question 10: Is worshipping at graves or invoking righteous Muslims — such as Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه), Ḥusayn (رضي الله عنه), Shaykh ʿAbdul Qādir al-Jīlānī, or Muʿīn ad-Dīn Chishtī — whether in front of their graves or from a distance — by saying things like:
- “Yā Muḥammad, intercede with Allah for
me,”
- “Yā ʿAlī, help me,”
- “Yā Ḥusayn, ask Allah for
me,”
- “Yā Shaykh ʿAbdul Qādir, grant me
success,”
- “Yā Muhammad, make duʿā to Allah for
me,”
— the same as idol worship (major shirk)?
A) No, because this is just a way of showing love and respect
to righteous figures.
B) Only if someone bows or
prostrates to the grave — not if they only ask for help.
✅ C) Yes, whether at the grave or far away — invoking others besides
Allah is major shirk like idol worship.
D) No,
because they are close to Allah, and asking them for help is part of Islamic spirituality.
✅ Correct Answer: C) Yes, whether at the grave or far away — invoking others besides Allah is major shirk like idol worship.
📖 Explanation:
Calling upon the dead — whether in front of their graves or from a distant place — for help, duʿā, intercession, or needs is major shirk (ash-shirk al-akbar). It is the same as idol worship, even if the person being called upon is a prophet or righteous Muslim.
Allah says:
“And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor
harms you. If you do so, then indeed you would be among the wrongdoers
(mushrikeen).”
📖 Surah Yūnus
10:106
And also:
“They worship besides Allah things that hurt them not, nor profit
them, and they say: ‘These are our intercessors with Allah.’ Say: Do you inform Allah of
that which He knows not in the heavens and the earth? Glorified and Exalted is He above all that which
they associate as partners.”
📖 Surah
Yūnus 10:18
Even if someone believes they are only asking the person to ask Allah on their behalf — it is still shirk, as this was the exact belief of Quraysh idolaters:
“We only worship them that they may bring us near to
Allah.”
📖 Surah az-Zumar 39:3
“And they worship besides Allah that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, ‘These are our intercessors with Allah.’”
(Surah Yunus, 10:18)
🛑 Shirk remains shirk — regardless of time, place, or intention. It nullifies all deeds if a person dies upon it without repentance.
