Knowledge in One Go
"Whoever doesn't protect the foundation is prevented from reaching their aim in knowledge, and whoever wants to attain knowledge in one go will lose it in one go."
It was also said: "Overcrowding knowledge in the ear misguides one's understanding."
Shaykh Salih Al-Fawzan said:
Whoever wants to take all the knowledge at once will miss out on all the knowledge. He will not attain anything. However, whoever takes it gradually—just like a road. The road is traveled in stages until the destination is reached.
Likewise, seeking knowledge is in stages until you reach the objective you desire. Everything has a path and methodology. If you neglect it, you will not attain what you intended.
Allah says:
"Be you Rabbaniyyun (learned people who practice and teach the Book), because you are teaching the Book and studying it." – (Qur’an 3:79)
So a beginner student of knowledge comes, young in age, and someone starts teaching him al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, or al-Mughni in Fiqh—this is not correct. This is not the path of cultivation. This is not being Rabbani.
Take knowledge gradually—like a child.
In the beginning, a child is nourished only with milk. He cannot digest heavy food. Then gradually he is given food.
Likewise, the beginner student of knowledge is like a child. Do not overload him. Do not give him too much at once.
Give him little by little:
• A little grammar
• A little Fiqh
• A little Aqidah
• A little Tawheed
Continue step by step until his knowledge develops gradually.
End Of Speech
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) mentioned in the introduction to Usul al-Tafsir that the companions would not move beyond ten verses of the Qur’an until they understood them, acted upon them, and taught them to others. Thus, they were given knowledge along with action.
