Today we see that people show a lot of kindness and love toward Allah’s creation, such as humans and animals. Some people take great care of their pet dogs and cats, but at the same time, in human relationships there is fighting, insulting, hurting others, destroying someone’s honor, and even killing in extreme cases.
If someone slaps us once, abuses us, or causes some worldly loss, we gather our relatives and fight back, or we go to the police and take legal action. People hold grudges for life and say that injustice has been done and someone’s rights have been taken away.
But when it comes to the right of Allah, such as worshipping Him without committing major shirk (the greatest ظلم against Allah), people become careless.
As I mentioned earlier, when people ظلم each other, they stop talking and develop hatred. But if someone is a non-Muslim, or someone who appears to be a Muslim outwardly, prays, fasts, gives charity, and performs Hajj, yet at the same time commits major shirk, such as asking prophets or righteous people for help after their worldly death, people do not stop him. Instead, many people become stronger in this wrong belief rather than correcting it.
In worldly matters, if a fight happens, we boycott each other and stop relations. But when major shirk is done against Allah, people do not warn others, do not explain it, and do not remind them about the punishment of Hell. Why? Because they fear that relationships may break, the other person may feel bad, or business may be affected.
People also think: “I have many sins myself, and people in my own family are not good, so how can I stop someone from major shirk?” But this thinking is wrong and comes from Shaytan. Major shirk is worse than zina, theft, robbery, murder, rape, disobedience to parents, and other major sins, because major shirk leads to Hell forever, while other sins may be forgiven by Allah if He wills. But major shirk will not be forgiven on the Day of Judgment.
Today people are busy collecting wealth, competing with relatives, gaining respect in society, and trying to make their children better than others. Meanwhile, the greatest right, which is the right of Allah, is ignored. But this is the biggest issue: eternal Hell or eternal Paradise.
People ignore major shirk in their families, relatives, and society because Allah is not like humans, so they do not feel how serious it is. If a human insults them, they become angry immediately, but when someone commits shirk against Allah, they remain silent.
A person only reacts to what hurts him personally or what causes him worldly loss. Because of this, he does not realize that the greatest injustice is committing shirk against Allah.
Allah Himself has clearly told us through the last Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that shirk in worship is the greatest injustice. In Surah Luqman (31:13), Allah says that shirk is the greatest ظلم.
The Prophet ﷺ also said that the first of the seven destructive sins is shirk. (Sahih al-Bukhari 2766)
Allah also says in the Qur’an that most people do not believe in Him except while committing shirk (Surah Yusuf 12:106).
In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah says that if a person comes with any sins except shirk, Allah can forgive him if He wills. But if someone associates partners with Him, then that will not be forgiven.
First, focus on the ظلم (injustice) done against Allah, then on the ظلم done against His creation.
The right of Allah is the greatest, and compared to it, the rights of humans or any creation are smaller.
We often show love and kindness to people and animals, and we build friendships and enmities based on worldly reasons. But when it comes to worshipping Allah without committing major shirk (which is the greatest ظلم against Allah), we become careless or ignore it.
Because we have hearts and souls, when we ظلم someone or when someone ظلم us, we feel it and understand how painful it is. But Allah is not like humans, and He does not live among people in this world for us to see what displeases Him directly.
It is not befitting for Allah to come into this world, use the toilet, have children, suffer, or become sick. All of this goes against His عظمت (greatness). Because of this, Allah, in His wisdom, sent Prophets to this earth to teach people how to live, to worship Allah properly, to give glad tidings of Paradise, and to warn from Hellfire.
Christians and Hindus believe that God came to this world in the form of an incarnation. This is false. We only know about Allah through what He revealed through the Prophets and what the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explained in authentic hadith.
Allah has clearly explained through His final Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that shirk is the greatest ظلم. So we should not rely on our own thinking in matters like shirk, tawheed, iman, and the names and attributes of Allah. Allah is unseen, and major shirk, minor shirk, major kufr, and minor kufr are all ظلم against Him. Especially major shirk and major kufr lead to eternal punishment in Hellfire.
We fear poverty. We think about how to earn more money, gain respect in society, increase our bank balance, and improve our worldly status. We strive for these things and fear not achieving them. But if you reflect on the Qur’an and Sunnah, you will see that the Prophets and the Companions feared shirk and hypocrisy.
For example, Ibrahim, Nuh, and Muhammad ﷺ feared shirk. Even the great Companions feared hypocrisy, even though they were given glad tidings of Paradise in this world. Yet they still feared Allah deeply. Today, some Muslims read a book like “Kitab at-Tawheed” once and think they are safe from shirk and kufr.
If a person falls into shirk, they should immediately repent. This is the benefit of having correct knowledge of tawheed. But the people of innovation who fall into major shirk and kufr rarely repent, because they follow what their forefathers did and take pride in it, saying: “Were all our elders wrong?” Their misguided scholars have confused them regarding major shirk and kufr.
We must continue worshipping Allah without committing major shirk—whether in the heart, on the tongue, or through actions—until death.
It is like a boxing match: a person falls, gets up, falls again, and keeps getting up until the bell rings. That bell is death.
Allah said:
“Worship your Lord until certainty (death) comes to you.”
(Surah Al-Hijr 15:99)
