#44. Islam and Homosexuality: What happened in Sodom and Gomorrah? The Prophet Lūt (Lot) and his Daughters in the Qur’an and the Bible
Introduction
The Bible speaks at length about the prohibition of homosexuality and about the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Likewise, the Qur’an explains this event clearly and in a way that defends the honour of the Prophet Lūt (peace be upon him) from false claims that later appeared in biblical scriptures.
The Story of Prophet Lūt (peace be upon him)
Scholars such as Ibn Katheer and Imām As-Sa‘dī explained that Prophet Lūt (peace be upon him) was the nephew of Prophet Ibrāheem (peace be upon him). He learned from him and followed his guidance closely. After that, Lūt was sent as a prophet to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, a city located to the south-east of the Dead Sea with surrounding villages.
The people to whom he was sent were extremely corrupt in both belief and behaviour. Among the worst of their crimes was a form of immorality that had not been known before them. The men of those towns committed sexual acts with other men, something that went against human nature, intellect, morality, and divine revelation. For this reason, Allah sent Prophet Lūt to guide them back to the worship of Allah alone and to stop this sinful behaviour. He struggled with them for a long time and endured their hostility until Allah finally punished them.
A narration explaining what happened
Al-Hākim reported in Al-Mustadrak from Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the angels came to Lūt, he believed they were guests and welcomed them. The people of the town rushed toward him intending evil. At that moment Lūt called out:
قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ هَٰؤُلَاءِ بَنَاتِي هُنَّ أَطْهَرُ لَكُمْ ۖ فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ فِي ضَيْفِي ۖ أَلَيْسَ مِنكُمْ رَجُلٌ رَّشِيدٌ
“O my people! Here are my daughters, they are purer for you if you marry them lawfully. So fear Allah and degrade me not as regards my guests!” (Hood 11:78)
But the people refused and replied:
قَالُوا لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا لَنَا فِي بَنَاتِكَ مِنْ حَقٍّ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَعْلَمُ مَا نُرِيدُ
“Surely you know that we have neither any desire nor any need of your daughters, and indeed you know very well what we want!” (Hood 11:79)
Seeing their behaviour, Lūt felt helpless and said:
قَالَ لَوْ أَنَّ لِي بِكُمْ قُوَّةً أَوْ آوِي إِلَىٰ رُكْنٍ شَدِيدٍ
“Would that I had strength to overpower you, or that I could betake myself to some powerful support to resist you.” (Hood 11:80)
At that moment the angels revealed themselves:
يَا لُوطُ إِنَّا رُسُلُ رَبِّكَ لَن يَصِلُوا إِلَيْكَ ۖ
“O Lūt! Verily, we are the Messengers from your Lord! They shall not reach you!” (Hood 11:81)
The narration then explains how the angels protected Lūt and how the punishment of the people took place.
The meaning of the incident
This narration supports what is already mentioned in the Qur’an. The angels came in the form of handsome young men. Lūt feared that his people would attempt to harm them, because the people were already known for immoral behaviour. When the people gathered outside his house, he tried to guide them toward marriage instead of sin, but they rejected him completely.
The angels then revealed their identity and protected him. According to the scholars of tafsīr, the angels included Jibreel, Mikā’eel and Isrāfeel. They had first visited Prophet Ibrāheem and then went to the people of Lūt to establish the proof against them before punishment came.
The rescue of Prophet Lūt and the punishment of his people
Allah ordered Lūt to leave the town during the night together with his family. This is mentioned clearly in the Qur’an:
“The Angels said: ‘O Lūt! Verily, we are the Messengers from your Lord! They shall not reach you! So travel with your family in a part of the night, and let not any of you look back, but your wife (will remain behind), verily, the punishment which will afflict them, will afflict her. Indeed, morning is their appointed time. And is not the morning near?'” (Hood 11:81)
Then the punishment came:
فَلَمَّا جَاءَ أَمْرُنَا جَعَلْنَا عَالِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهَا
حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍ مَّنضُودٍ
مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ ۖ وَمَا هِيَ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
بِبَعِيدٍ
“So when Our Commandment came, We turned (the towns of Sodom in Palestine) upside down, and rained on them stones of baked clay, piled up. [Each stone] marked from your Lord, and they are not ever far from the wrongdoers.” (Hood 11:82-83)
The scholars explained that the angel Jibreel lifted the towns into the sky and then overturned them before stones were sent down upon the people. Only the believers were saved.
Comparison with the Biblical account
There are some similarities between the Qur’an and the Biblical narrative, but Muslims accept only what agrees with the Qur’an and the authentic teachings of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Anything that contradicts the Qur’an is considered a later distortion.
The Last Messenger of Allah said:
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Amr: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Convey (my teachings) to the people even if it were a single sentence, and tell others the stories of Bani Israel (which have been taught to you), for it is not sinful to do so. And whoever tells a lie on me intentionally, will surely take his place in the (Hell) Fire." - Sahih al-Bukhari 3461
For example, the Torah claims that the angels ate food when visiting Ibrāheem and Lūt. The Qur’an clearly rejects this idea and states:
“And certainly did Our messengers come to Abraham with good tidings…” (Hood 11:69-71)
False accusations against Prophet Lūt alyhisalam in Biblical Text
One of the most serious distortions in the Biblical text is the claim that the daughters of Lot committed incest with him after the destruction of the town. The Torah states:
“30. Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains…
36. So
both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.”
Such accusations are completely rejected in Islam. The Prophets are protected from such evil behaviour, and it is impossible that a noble prophet who spent his life fighting immorality would commit such acts. The Qur’an honours the prophets and protects their dignity.
Agreement of the scriptures about homosexuality
Even though the Qur’an corrects many distortions, there is still agreement between the scriptures that the people of Sodom were destroyed because of immoral behaviour. The Bible itself says in Genesis 19:
“5. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.””
The Old and New Testaments also clearly condemn such behaviour. For example:
Leviticus 20:13 says:
“If a man has sexual relations with a man as he does with a woman, both men have committed an abomination…”
Romans 1:27 states:
“Likewise, the men abandoned relations with women and burned with lust for one another…”
These verses show that all the earlier scriptures condemned this behaviour as well.
The Islamic position
Islam also teaches that this act is sinful and unnatural. However, the main focus of the message of Islam is first to call people to worship Allah alone. This was the starting point of every prophet. Once a person accepts that Allah is the only one worthy of worship, he understands that Allah knows what is best for human beings and will avoid what Allah has forbidden.
Homosexuality is considered a major sin, but the first call is always to Tawheed. When a person believes in Allah properly, he will then try to follow His commands and avoid sins.

#45. Homosexuality is Forbidden in AhleKitaab(The Jews & Christians)
The Bible (Old Testament) and Homosexuality
The Old Testament is followed by millions of Jews and Christians, and it too forbids men from having sexual relations with men. Chapters 18 and 20 of Leviticus list prohibited forms of intercourse:
“You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” Chapter 18 verse 22
“If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.” Chapter 20 verse 13
Deuteronomy 22:5 states: “A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord, your God, detests anyone who does this.” This is a clear prohibition of cross-dressing.
The Bible (New Testament) and Homosexuality
The New Testament also condemns homosexual practices. Romans 1:26-27 states: “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.”
Paul wrote in the First Epistle to the Corinthians 6:9-11 states: “Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men; nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were.” The words men who have sex with men translate two Greek words that refer to the passive and active participants in homosexual acts.

#46. Some LGBTQ Muslims Seek to Legalise the Major Sin of Same-Sex Relationships
Homosexuality: a sexual relationship with someone of the same sex.
Islam’s teaching about homosexuality is referred to in a story found in the Qur’an. This is the story of the Prophet Lūt (may Allah’s peace be upon him), who criticized the men of his town for their homosexual practices. Allah stated:
“And remember Lot (Lūt) when he said to his people: ‘Do you commit the worst sin such as none before you have committed among creation? Indeed, you practise your lusts on men instead of women. Nay, but you are a people transgressing beyond bounds.’” (Quran 7:80-81)
Some people (who engage in, or justify same-sex relationships) have tried to claim that the prohibition (in the verse above) refers to non-consensual sex between homosexuals. Others assert it refers to homosexual relationships outside of marriage. Both of these views clearly contradict this verse because Allah stated: “Indeed, you practise your lusts on men instead of women.” If the verse was referring to homosexual rape (or non-consensual sex), then that is equally forbidden against women. However, Allah (in this verse) allowed sex between heterosexuals (within marriage). Also, if the verse was only forbidding homosexuality outside of marriage, then sex between a man and woman before marriage is forbidden so why would Allah say: “instead of women”? Therefore, the only conclusion that can be drawn from this verse is that sexual relationships between people of the same sex are prohibited.
Furthermore, arbitrarily changing one’s gender from male to female (or vice-versa) does not alter the reality of the prohibition because there is a principle in Islam that states: “Changing the name of something does not change its reality.” So changing the name of alcohol to milk does not alter its reality nor the ruling of prohibition.
Allah (the Most High) also said:
أَتَأْتُونَ الذُّكْرَانَ مِنَ الْعَالَمِينَ – 26:165
وَتَذَرُونَ مَا خَلَقَ لَكُمْ رَبُّكُم مِّنْ أَزْوَاجِكُم ۚ بَلْ أَنتُمْ قَوْمٌ عَادُونَ – 26:166
“You come to the men of creation and you leave those wives whom Allah has created for you? Nay! You are a transgressing people.” (Qur’an 26: 165-166)
Ibn ‘Abbās narrated that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) stated:
لعن اللهُ من عمِل عملَ قومِ لوطٍ، لعن اللهُ من عمِل عملَ قومَ لوطٍ، لعن اللهُ مَن عملَ عملَ قومِ لُوطٍ
“The curse of Allah is upon the one who engages in the act of the People of Lūt. The curse of Allah is upon the one who engages in the act of the People of Lūt. The curse of Allah is upon the one who engages in the act of the People of Lūt.”
Reported in Musnad Imām Ahmad ibn Hanbal 4/292 and graded saheeh by Ahmad Shākir; see As-Silsilatus-Sahīhah of Al-Albāni, no. 6432, who graded it saheeh (authentic)
Jābir narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
إِنَّ أَخْوَفَ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَى أُمَّتِي عَمَلُ قَوْمِ لُوطٍ
“What I fear most for my followers is the act of the People of Lūt.” (i.e., sodomy)
(Collected by At-Tirmidhi, 1457 and Ibn Mājah, 2563, and graded as hasan by Al-Albāni)
When the people ignored the Prophet Lūt’s message, Allah destroyed the town and every transgressor in it, and He saved Lūt (peace be upon him) and his daughters. This event is a sign for the people who reflect. This story is also mentioned in the scriptures of the Jews and Christians.
Some LGBTQ Muslims Attempt to Justify the Sin of Same-Sex Relationships: “Born Gay?”
In recent years, various organisations have appeared that aim to support Muslims who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Many of these groups do not consider homosexuality to be sinful. Instead, they claim that people are born with these tendencies and therefore the Islamic ruling should not apply to them. Others argue that the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah do not apply in modern times or that they do not apply to people who say they are in love.
However, the overwhelming majority of Muslims continue to believe that homosexuality is a sin. This belief is based on clear verses of the Qur’an, authentic narrations from the Prophet (peace be upon him), the agreement of the early generations of Muslims, the consensus of the four major schools of Islamic law, and the position of Sunni scholars throughout more than fourteen centuries.
Islam teaches that a Muslim must obey Allah by following what He has commanded and avoiding what He has prohibited.
If a person declares something lawful that Allah has clearly forbidden in the Qur’an and Sunnah, such as legalising fornication, alcohol, gambling or homosexuality, then that person has gone outside the fold of Islam.
However, a Muslim who commits a major sin while still believing that it is sinful remains a Muslim, although his faith is weak. Such a person is under the threat of punishment unless he repents. If he is punished in the Hereafter, he will not remain in the Fire forever.
Controlling Desires and Temptations
Muslims who struggle with sinful desires or unnatural temptations must try to resist them and turn to Allah for help. They should ask Allah for strength, remain firm upon prayer, give charity, fast in Ramadan, and try to get married if possible. They should also stay close to righteous people and work to control their desires instead of allowing those desires to control them.
Not every desire must be fulfilled. A believer is commanded to discipline himself and keep his desires within the limits set by Allah. Today we are living in a time where modesty, good character, and religious commitment are often discouraged, while immorality and shameless behaviour are openly promoted.
Even so, a Muslim must remain firm and remember that staying committed to Islam and the Sunnah during difficult times brings greater reward from Allah for those who are patient. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Know that which has passed you by was never going to befall you, and whatever has befallen you was never going to miss you. And know that victory comes with patience, relief comes after affliction and ease comes after hardship.” (Reported by Ahmad and others, see An-Nawawi 40 Hadith, no. 19)

#47. Refutation of Innovators, Liberal Preachers, and Misguided Imams Regarding the Act of Homosexuality
Introduction
Throughout Islamic history, the greatest harm to the religion has not always come from open enemies. Rather, the most dangerous damage has often been caused by those who claim to speak in the name of Islam while altering its teachings. When individuals who present themselves as imams, scholars, or Islamic speakers begin to justify what Allah has clearly forbidden, the danger becomes far more serious than the opposition of non-Muslims.
External opponents such as Christians, Jews, or Hindus do not claim to represent Islam, and therefore their beliefs are already clear to the Muslim community. Their disagreement with Islamic teachings is open and obvious. However, innovators and liberal-minded preachers present themselves as Muslims and speak using Islamic terms, while at the same time trying to change the basic principles of the religion. Because they appear to represent Islam outwardly, many ordinary Muslims become confused and are misled by them.
For this reason, refuting those who corrupt the fundamentals of Islam takes priority. When someone openly denies what is clearly established in the Qur’an and Sunnah, especially in matters that are already agreed upon by the scholars of Islam, their statements must be exposed and clarified. This is not done out of personal hatred, but in order to protect the religion and to prevent Muslims from being deceived.
In recent times, some individuals who are described as “progressive” or “liberal” imams have begun to openly defend and promote the acceptance of homosexual acts, even though this matter has been clearly condemned in the Qur’an, the authentic Sunnah, and by the scholars of Islam throughout history. Because of this, it becomes necessary to respond to their claims and to clarify the truth so that Muslims are not misled by those who speak in the name of Islam while changing its teachings.
1. Misguided, Liberal, Innovator, so-called “Muti Menk.”
Interviewer: Alright. Is it okay to be a homosexual?
Innovator Muti Menk: If a person wants to be, they are free to be a homosexual. If they don’t want to be, they are free not to be a homosexual. But it’s not okay to force anyone’s opinion on another person. I personally am not homosexual, but I have interacted with so many people who are homosexual. They get along with me just like people who are Jewish and Christian and those who don’t have a religion, and so many other people, Hindus and so many more. Recently, I have more people who have told me, you know what, I am actually homosexual, and so on. So it’s a secular right to be or not to be. And this is why I say I am not. And if someone else is not, then it doesn’t mean they need to promote hatred. They don’t need to promote the beating, the hitting, the killing of a person who chooses otherwise.
